NJ GDL Program

New Jersey Graduated Driver Licensing — Step by Step

NJ uses a three-stage GDL program for teen drivers. Here is exactly how it works and where our lessons fit in.

01

Learner's Permit (Age 16+)

Pass the NJ MVC knowledge test to receive your permit. You must hold it for at least 12 months and complete 6 months of supervised driving before applying for a license.

02

Supervised Driving Practice

Log at least 6 months of supervised driving. Our lessons count toward this requirement and build real-world skills faster than practice with parents alone.

03

Behind-the-Wheel Lessons

Complete professional driving lessons with a certified instructor. We prepare teens for the road test and real-world driving situations.

04

Probationary License (Age 17+)

Pass the NJ road test to receive your probationary license. Restrictions apply: no driving between 11pm–5am, no more than 1 passenger under 21.

05

Full Unrestricted License (Age 18)

After 12 months with a probationary license and no violations, you qualify for a full unrestricted NJ driver's license.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from teen drivers and parents in New Jersey.

What age can teens start driving lessons in New Jersey?
Teens must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid NJ Learner's Permit before taking behind-the-wheel lessons. We recommend starting lessons as soon as the permit is obtained.
How many lessons does a teen need before the road test?
Most teens need 6–10 professional lessons to be road-test ready. Students who practice regularly with a parent between lessons often progress faster.
Do driving lessons count toward the NJ GDL permit requirement?
Yes. Professional lessons count toward the supervised driving requirement. We also provide documentation of completed lessons if needed.
Do you offer lessons in Spanish for teen drivers?
Yes. Our instructor provides lessons in both English and Spanish. This is especially helpful for families where parents are more comfortable in Spanish.
Can parents observe lessons?
We recommend parents allow one-on-one instruction for best results, but we are happy to discuss your teen's progress after each session.
Where do teen driving lessons take place?
Lessons depart from our Piscataway, NJ location and cover local roads, residential areas, and highways. We also practice in areas used for the NJ road test.
